Sarlo Books Blog 10 – Dolce Far Niente: The Sweetness of Doing Nothing
A few years ago, I was watching the movie Eat Pray Love. Julia Roberts’ character was searching for balance and meaning in her life. During her time in Italy, she was introduced to a concept deeply rooted in Italian culture – dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing. She also encountered attraversiamo – let’s cross over – an invitation to step into a different way of living.
Those ideas stayed with me.
I began reading about dolce far niente and reflecting on my own life. I had spent forty years practicing law, acting for hundreds of companies immersed in long hours and high expectations. I lived with constant pressure and witnessed many executives experiencing the same relentless pace. Like many, I felt guilty when I wasn’t working. Over time, I came to understand that this way of living was not only unsustainable – it was detrimental to my health. At some point, a decision had to be made. It was time to cross over to a different way of working and living.
This book is a fictional story inspired by lived experience and a fascination with dolce far niente. It is an invitation to pause – to question our relationship with time and productivity, and to consider whether slowing down might allow us to live more fully – not less.
In the story, Joseph has built the life he thought he wanted – a successful career, a busy schedule, and the constant hum of responsibility. Yet beneath the momentum lies a quiet restlessness he can’t ignore. When chance conversations with the reflective and warm-hearted Giovanni begin to challenge his pace of life, Joseph is drawn into an unexpected journey: learning how to slow down in a world that never stops.
Through coffee shop conversations with Giovanni, evening walks, and moments of honest self-reflection, Joseph discovers the Italian philosophy of dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing – and begins to question what it truly means to live well.
Warm, thoughtful, and relatable, this story explores the tension between achievement and presence, ambition and contentment. It is an invitation to discover balance, savour everyday moments, and reconnect with what matters most.
